The Combustion Art Competition was initiated in 2004 at the International Combustion Symposium in Chicago, and this inaugural event received 40 submissions of outstanding quality. From 2004–2010, prizes were awarded by vote of a panel of judges; since 2011, ballots have been distributed to meeting attendees for voting. A cash prize is offered to winners.
